Start with a hydrating moisture that will help your foundation to sink into skin.“These give the skin some added hydration and sheen,” the makeup artist says. Patinkin is partial to serum-based foundations or foundations that have non-comedogenic oils in them. Shamban recommends skin-centric formulas that contain ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and humectants that will help keep skin's moisture intact and deliver a more dewy, satin finish, and she thinks multi-tasking products that boast anti-aging ingredients are always worthwhile. Shamban agrees saying, "it may seem counterintuitive, but less is more-you don't want product building up in your creases and drawing more attention to them." It’s with this in mind that both experts suggest seeking more skin benefits from foundations that you previously may have never considered.ĭr. “At a certain point, trying to cover up age-related changes to the skin can backfire and actually make them more obvious, mostly because the skin is dryer and foundations don't meld as easily,” notes makeup artist Jenny Patinkin. With all this brewing just beneath (and indeed atop) the surface, what you look for and need from a foundation can dramatically change over time. This is because oil production slows down over time (good news if you've suffered from acne for a long time, but not so good if you already had dry skin).
